Call Me Communal!

29 November 2014 was a clear crisp winter morning. The serenity of the morning was pierced by the cries of Modi Maaro and Modi Murdabad. All this uproar is from eight trucks carrying Muslims to Esplande to protest the tirade against the madrasas in the wake of the Burdwan blasts. My maid caught up in the excitement threatened to bring her whole village to teach us (i.e. all Hindus) a lesson.

Our family friend is a Muslim and we have known them for years now. Their younger son Junaid is in second grade and the eldest Aman is in grade seven. Junaid dreams up horrible weapons of mass destruction which he aspires to give to a Jihadi in Kashmir to use against Hindus!

My mother was recently travelling from Kolkata to Bolpur and as the evening was approaching, her Muslim neighbour started bragging about the strength in numbers that they have and about how no one in West Bengal can touch Muslims. That is how strong they are!

If one goes out to the local market in Rajarhat and the moment the vendor and passer-bys realize that one is a Hindu, the attitudes change. The sly glances carry menacing threats.

Sounds contrite, but unfortunately they are all true. It is always about the threat. It is always about the show of strength. This is the tolerant Muslims in West Bengal.

With two lakh Muslims flexing their communal muscle in the heart of Kolkata, where are the Hindus in the state one may wonder? But, we tend to forget; the Hindus are all secular and cannot assert in protest!
