Late Gopal Rajbhar

Late Gopal Rajbhar used to ferry children in a van for a living. He was a loyal BJP worker who laid down his life as he was ruthless attacked after the April 17, 2014 rally by TMC supporters. He had sustained serious injuries and passed away a few days after being released from hospital. He is survived by his mother, wife, son and daughter.

With two young children and a aging parent-in-law, Shakuntala Debi Rajbhar has no means of supporting the family. She has opened an SBI account and we appeal to all to contribute generously to support the family of this brave soul.

Account Details:

Late Gopal Rajbhar

60 days and counting

Though it has ben just 2 months in office, the effect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being felt on a wide range of affairs beyond just the cosmetic change of coming early to work. There is finally a Prime Minister who is fully engaged in the process of decision making and implementation. The pace and quality of work is the palpable difference.

1. Accountability at the top: There is constant monitoring of all ministries and their political and departmental heads. Every Minister has to  account for their expenses and justify the work accomplished by those expenses. Dinner parties, travel plans...even appropriate attire in public have come under scrutiny.

2. National Food Grid: Price rise being the biggest concern all over the country has lead to the creation of the National Food Grid to curb the agricultural mafias. All 3,600 mandis or major produce markets across the country are linked to the grid. The Prime Minister is also keen on fast tracking the Agricultural Corridor from Punjab to West Bengal.

3. Green Corridor: A "Green Corridor" along Rajasthan and Gujarat is being proposed to boost economic activity. The corridor would use solar energy to generate significant volumes of electricity. Similar initiatives are also being considered for other parts of the country. This would help enable the transition of people from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources.

4. National Population Register: Prime Minister is working towards concrete illegal immigration controls. There will be the creation of a national citizen database - the National Population Register. This register will be used to ensure proper right and benefits reach the intended target and not unscrupulous agents.

5. National Litigation Data Grid: This will create an online database of all cases in our courts today. This will provide status of cases, information about the case and hearing dates. This will also enable the Supreme Court to measure efficiency in the system. There is also talk of hiring 200 additional judges to clear the current backlog.

6. MyGov: The Prime Minister launched MyGov to initiate the process of crowdsourcing the developmental activities of this nation.

7.  Women's Bank: Banks meant for women is being proposed to empower and take care of the financial needs of women. Rashtriya Mahila Kosh and Bharatiya Mahila Bank may be merged together to create a new entity.

8. Clean the Ganges: An inter-ministerial panel has been formed to oversee the task. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley gave it 20 billion rupees (S$411 million) for the financial year ending March 31.

9. Pure Breed Cows: Rs 500 crores has bee allotted to the program of breeding pure bred cows. This will ensure high milk production. There is also provision to use the cow dung and urine for matures and biogas for electricity.

10. Forest and Environmental approvals: To fast track the approval of projects from forest and environmental ministry, the process will go online. Rather than freeze or roll back economic activities was the norm in the past decade,  there will be a balanced decision making process in view of the rights and interest of the public.

The Common One

What does progress mean to you?

There are days when the political rhetoric simply does not make any sense. As any person trying to eke out a decent living in the state, these are a few of the common wishes from a common one.

1. Have a job to go to so that one can support ailing aging parents. There is no wish for a top of the salary but enough to live on comfortable with a small amount set aside for rainy days. The pay package should not be 50% below the market value of the skill set!

2. Get a public transport bus at regular intervals to go to work. Staring into the horizon for a bus to come is very lonely and disheartening exercise indeed. Paying exorbitant shuttle fare is burning a hole in the already limited resources.

3. Be able to afford a decent phone connection to stay in touch with friends and family.

4. Be able to own a home of our own one day so that one can retire comfortably.

5. Be able to afford a decent standard of living for my family which they deserve.

6. Go on vacations during Durga Puja. The extended family gets together for such trip which are tremendous fun.

7. Be able to see the children graduate from a good school with values that will make them worth human beings and responsible productive citizens.

8. A doctor to rely on in case of health crisis. A affordable hospital which ensures proper attentive care of its wards.

9. Proper roads so that the body aches less after a long gruelling day at work.

10. Safety for the family and especially for the women in the family on road and late night outs.

11. Less power cuts during the long harsh summers.

12.  Grow old watching grandchildren enjoy the world as we had enjoyed - unconditionally loved and care free.

Engage, Engage, Engage

Time and tide waits for none! With each passing day we are losing an opportunity to work for the betterment of our great state.

This post is a call to all BJP members to engage, engage and cant say enough of it - ENGAGE!

There is so much to plan and execute that it is difficult to say as to where to start. Please reach out to the local office or representatives to know how you can contribute. Every small bit counts.

Reach out to your friends and neighbours to spread the message of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and our party.

This state has given so much to all of us and to the nation. We can never do enough for it.

Forget Me Not (2)

Things the West Bengal Government forgot:

Time and again, the current Government has failed to uphold the law of the land and time and again the Judiciary has highlighted a callous and careless Government.

1.Tapas Pal Case : After much patronage and considerable time to support Tapas Pal from the Government, the High Court slammed the Mamata Banerjee Government for laid back attitude on a case of such importance. When a lawmaker tries to become a lawbreaker, the law has finally spoken out in a firm and decisive manner.

2. Saradha Scam : After the Government protecting the perpetrators to the extent possible, it was the Supreme Court that ordered the CBI to probe the scam to the fullest across all state lines.

3. Parui Murder Case: High Court raps Bengal Government for inaction in the murder case involving Monirul Sheikh and Anubrata Mondol though the accused are clearly mentioned in the FIR.

The Chief Minister has always given the message that she will defend her cadres no matter what the crime is!

Bengal Icons Hijacked

Mamata Banerjee has taken up the responsibility to restore the lost glory of Bengal. It is not that rosy a picture as you might imagine.

Restoring lost glory of Bengal essentially means cohorting with film stars and cricketers. Film stars are popular and attract large crowds at public meetings which hopefully may turn into votes. Cricketers are also wildly popular figures which attract reams of newspaper coverage. But are film stars and cricketers the only guardians of culture and heritage?

What about the thousands of doctors toiling away in remote villages of the state? They are helping save lives with barely there resources.

What about the thousand of farmers toiling away on the soil in these uncertain times? As Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, it is time we salute those unseen hands that feed all of us.

What about the thousands and teachers toiling away in schools across the state? They are preparing the next generation of guardians of the very heritage that she is trying to save.

What about the thousands of sportsmen and women toiling away for the state and national glory? They are winning medals without sponsorships or rewards from the state.

What about the thousands of writers, artists, painters toiling away to bring revival of the language and documenting our way of life? They are upholding our rich history and culture and enriching the content by adding their voice and work to it.

Rewarding already cash-rich movie stars and cricketers will not bring glory back to the state. People in the state make Bengal. People silently working towards its upliftment deserve attention, support and recognition. Honoring the past is essential. But bolstering the present to pave way for the future is vital. Let us not miss this opportunity to truly restore the glory of Bengal.

Picture of the Day : US Boycott

When there are terror attacks in India, why doesn't the same boycott of terrorists and countries backing such terrorists happen with such vehemence and determination?

Hypocrisy, we wonder?

Jails and Jihadis

Kolkata jails are turning into havens for captured jihads.

Abul Subhan, who was arrested on July 20 from North Delhi, disclosed to the Delhi police that he had contacted his nephew Asahbuddin alias Shahbuddin Shaukat — who has been handed life imprisonment in the Partha Roy Burman kidnapping case and is presently lodged in a Kolkata jail.

Such revelations are not new. A previous search of jail cells had yielded 355 cell phones and more than double the number of SIM cards.

Numerous terror accused and operatives jailed in Kolkata jails routinely operate out of their jail cells with ease to difference parts of the country and abroad.

This terror network is routinely ignored by the jail authorities as easily as ignoring the drug trade going in in the jails and other murderous activities. The jail authorities do not inform the police of their knowledge nor do they take appropriate action like lodging FIRs on time.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has on occasion visited several jails to take stock of the matter but to no change in the situation.

Unless there is an end to the political patronage of criminals there is no hope of beginning jail reforms in West Bengal.

MyGoV

A modern democracy is founded on the principle "by the people, for the people and of the people".

And more than ever is the need for people's participation in the process of how our country is governed. We all have the power to contribute and change the country for the betterment of all people.

With an eye to collaborate and empower the vast population of this country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched MyGov (http://mygov.nic.in).

Features :

1. Citizens can discuss key challenges facing the country.
2. The portal has already started discussion on 6 key areas - job creation, cleaning the Ganga, boosting girl child education, cleaning India, skill India and digital India.
3. The portal is divided into two sections - Discuss and Do.
4. Citizens can upload documents, case studies, videos and work plans on the portal.
5. Citizens can volunteer to work on projects arising out of the ideas on the portal.
6. The most important topics will directly reach the Prime Minister.
7. The person with the most points earned through work on project will get a chance to meet the Prime Minister.

Political discourse is part of our culture. The "adda" now needs to "add" to the country concrete benefits and real change. We all have the time and energy to develop this nation of ours.

Understanding : Fundamental Duties

"...Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country..." These words have stood the test of time. Though "Rights" are unassailable, it is also good to remember that "Duties" are equally demanding.

"Fundamental Duties" was added to the Constitution of India by the 42nd Amendment Act in 1976.

The Fundamental Duties noted in the constitution are as follows:

—It shall be the duty of every citizen of India —
  • to abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem;
  • to cherish and follow the noble ideals which inspired our national struggle for freedom;
  • to uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India;
  • to defend the country and render national service when called upon to do so;
  • to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities; to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women;
  • to value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite culture;
  • to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wild life, and to have compassion for living creatures;
  • to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform;
  • to safeguard public property and to abjure violence;
  • to strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievement;
  • who is a parent or guardian to provide opportunities for education to his child or, as the case may be, ward between the age of six and fourteen years

BJP : Study Group Findings

The Study Group headed by party Vice President Balbir Punj presented its findings after a visiting Birbhum district to party President Amit Shah.

Highlights of the report:

1. There is constant danger of violence in the state and minorities are living in constant fear.

2. The Union Home Ministry should take cognisance of such violence and demand a report from the Bengal Government.

3.  National Minorities Commission should be on the alerts for violations of rights across the state. Adequate action should be taken along with the Human Rights Commission.

4. The report highlights that CPI-M goons have joined TMC and spreading violence across the state as it did under CPI-M rule.

5. The up-swing in BJP support has unnerved the TMC and they are resorting to violent looting and killings along with police and Government support against BJP workers.

6. The violence in the state is demoralizing people who had voted TMC to power in hope of a better future for the state.

U, Me, Us

The streets are alight with decoration to celebrate Eid today. Durga Puja is just round the corner and one can faintly hear the footsteps of Christmas. More than any other city or town, we, in Kolkata pride ourselves on the inclusive society that we have built over the years. We cherish this religious and cultural history constantly through our food and literature.

This interweaving of common struggles and heritage is a delicate fabric. It has to be nurtured and protected at all costs. Inclusivity is the order of the day as we continue to march towards more integrated societies. Tolerance of all people and faith in the fundamental goodness of all people is a must. It is very easy to get lost in political rhetoric and stereotypes.

“U”+ “Me” make an “Us”. One cannot live without the other. Today on the occasion of Eid, let’s pledge toward building a more welcoming society in Bengal.

The Promised Land

Thousands of Bengalis are moving out of the state every day in search of better prospects – education, jobs, health care and most importantly a safe and secure lifestyle. Bengalis are leaving behind families of old parents, ancestral properties vowing never to return to these shores if possible.

It is such a sorry state of affairs. With shrinking economy and diminishing job opportunities, the retention of the upwardly mobile Bengalis is stark indeed. And for those who had come back to Bengal in hope of working towards the development of the state, it is a nightmare unparalleled. They came back, even accepting pay cuts, to make a new home in the state. They uprooted their families, left promising careers behind.

For higher education, especially, the prospect of free and fair admission in Bengal is a mirage. Ruling party affiliation is a must for entrance into top universities. Moreover, the standard of discourse and research in these universities is a matter of discussion in itself. The flight of students to West and South India is all too apparent.

The promise of improved healthcare is still a dream, yet to come true. The quest towards South India for better care, especially post-operative care is too old a tale.

Yet every Bengali in distant shores yearns for a return to West Bengal - a yearning for a return to the Promised Land. A land full of opportunities, culture and history. It is also the nerve centre of the Eastern region. All other states including the NE states look to Bengal as a major economic and educational hub.

There is a constant babble around development in Bengal but how will Bengal develop if the best talents leave the state? As Bengalis it is high time that we fight for our own state. The upcoming 2016 elections cannot come too soon for change to begin. We need to repose our faith in the possible glory of West Bengal. We need to create a new chapter for West Bengal instead of living off past memories. The glorious Bengal is the past not the present and future. It is our responsibility, our duty to build a future for the next generation. It is not about what we get but what we can do for others. Mahatma Gandhi said,”…be the change you want to see…”. Do we really want change? Can we be the agents of change?

Eid Mubarak

Forget Me Not

Some things the West Bengal Government forgot:

1.       5 more tea gardens shutdown have in North Bengal and are pushing workers to the brink of starvation. The situation is so bad that parents are selling off their children in order to survive.

2.       5 more jute mills have shut down in West Bengal and are leaving the close to 40,000 workers with no means to support themselves.

3.       5 major units (Shalimar Paints, Hindustan Motors, Haldia Petrochemicals, Jessops, Dunlop) have shut down leaving scores of workers unemployed.  Livid Eastern Coalfield is threatening shut down.

4.       5 times is the increase in the infiltration of refugees from Bangladesh as it forgot to protect the borders.

5.       5 more deaths as encephalitis warning was forgotten by the Government.

6.       5 more attacks on women/girls in as many days. The Government forgot its promise to protect citizens.

7.       5 reasons for not delaying civic polls in West Bengal on time. The Government forgot that holding polls on time is a responsibility.

8.       73 Ponzi scheme had to be shut down in the state. Thousands lot their money in these schemes run under the aegis of the ruling party.

9.       The Government forgot to pay for the West Bengal ads in newspapers. INS has asked to clear the back dues.

10.   41,621 companies closed down in West Bengal in the last year alone which accounts for 23% of the total registered companies.

When will the misrule end?

Economy, Economy, Economy

Though there are several measures of economic conditions available in the Census. We will use the ones which are most relevant.

We will begin the analysis by first stating some data from the Census of India to provide a picture of the current state of West Bengal (henceforth WB) and compare it with two other states Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh (AP). We are choosing these two states as the former is generally regarded as a success story of growth and the latter is of comparable economic and population size of WB.

(a) Condition of houses as "Good":

In 2001, WB- 42.4%, Gujarat- 52.2%, AP- 59.1%
In 2011: WB- 42%, Gujarat-67%, AP-70%.

(b) Electricity connection:

In 2001, WB- 37.5%, Gujarat- 80.4%, AP- 67.2%.
In 2011, WB-54.5%, Gujarat-91%, AP-92%.

(c) Household availing Banking services:

In 2001, WB- 37%, Gujarat- 38%, AP- 31%.
In 2011, WB-49%, Gujarat-58%, AP- 53%

(d) Households having Television:

In 2001, WB-27%, Gujarat- 39%, AP- 32%.
In 2011, WB- 35%, Gujarat-54%, AP-59%.

This goes to show the money power of the people of Bengal!

Guns, Goons and Government

Violence is not the exception but the norm in West Bengal. These are a few of the comments to ponder upon:

“…Shajano Golpo (concocted story)…”
 - Mamata Banerjee (Chief Minister of West Bengal, TMC) on the Park Street rape case

“…burn down the houses of independent candidates and bomb police if they dared interfere…”
  - Arubrata Mondol (Birbhum Trinamool President, TMC)

"…If anyone forces into your hut, kill him. I will take care of you…"
 - Arup Chakrabarty (Bankura Trinamool Leader, TMC)

“…Will send my boys to rape opposition party women…”
 - Tapas Pal (Member of Parliament, TMC)

“…lynch anti-social elements to death…”
 - Asit Majumdar (Member of Legislative Assembly, TMC)

Elie Weisel said, “…To remain silent is the greatest sin of all…we must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented...”

Isn’t it time that we all spoke up in a strong and unified voice?

How much and how much longer shall this culture of violence continue?

Call Me Communal!

1.      I went to Catholic schools and college.

2.      My best friends are Muslims and Christians.

3.      I celebrate Durga Puja, Diwali, Eid and Christmas with equal gusto.

4.      I believe in the humanity of all people.

5.      I believe in the equal opportunity to develop and grow for all.

6.      I believe in equality of all before the law.

7.      I believe in the Constitution of India.

8.      I am a proud Hindu.

9.      I am a proud BJP member.

10.  I am a proud Indian.

Dance of Dictatorship

The Left ruled West Bengal for 35 years. They ensured power stayed in their hands in a simple, straight forward way. They curbed free speech. Violently attacking members of opposition parties (our current Chief Minister, herself, has been survived the brunt of such attacks on more than one occasion). Violence was the order of the day. Violent politics, violent trade unions and violent society. Monopoly is after all the most efficient form of business.

To fight things change was need. TMC promised change. Change in the way we worked and lived. A promise of freedom from violence and an ordered society. Much needed development of the state and prosperity for all. People believed in the promise and overwhelmingly voted TMC to power.

But since then it has been hard to break the habits of 35 years. TMC and our Chief Minister have found that monopoly is still the most efficient form of politics. So, free speech gets one a “jail-card”.  Destroying opposition party office is terms as suppressing communalism. Killing opposition party workers is serving the greater cause of secularism. Promoting a violent and intolerant society a means to spread fear and keep one in power.

Is this the 21st century West Bengal or the Dark Ages? Is this Dance of Democracy or the Eccentricity of Dictatorship?

We all like to think of West Bengal as a class apart. After all there was a time then what Bengal thought today, rest of India though tomorrow. But today we are all silent. Mute witnesses to a failed ideology and broken promises.

The urgency of these questions cannot wait another 2 years.
Policy. Why?
Develop. What?
Empower. Who?
Law and order. When?
Inclusive society. Where?
Enable. How?

Are we ready to take action toward concrete change or stand by to facilitate more of the same?

Eye on 2016

With the growing momentum of the party post the 2014 General Elections, it is high time all BJP party members contribute with an eye on 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections. The need of the hour is voter registration and grass root mobilization. BJP official website (http://www.bjp.org/join-the-party) has an easy online registration process. It takes barely 5 minutes to complete registration.

As a special note to all Samvad members, please encourage and facilitate member registration in your individual circles. The Volunteer Form is given below:

Facebook and Tweets have to convert to votes to win election and bring change our great state.

The Silent Tide

According to the Centre for Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), BJP won 45 of 87 Lok Sabha seats identified as having high Muslim voters across India. In West Bengal also, its share of the Muslim vote went from 6.14 per cent in 2009 to 17.5% in 2014. All this has, of course, made headlines. But the silent tide of Muslims towards BJP is the untold story of a populace which makes up 25.2% of the population of West Bengal. In villages across the state, “Yogdaan” camps have Muslims signing up with the BJP in their hordes.

Narendra Modi’s campaign speech is still reverberating well past the election meetings. The comparison with Gujarat is stark. The average per capita income of Muslims in rural Gujarat is over Rs. 700 while in Bengal is it below Rs. 500. The per capita income of urban Muslims is above Rs. 900 while in Bengal it is less than Rs. 700. The average Muslim bank deposit in Gujarat is Rs. 35,000 while in Bengal it is Rs. 11,000.

Moreover, over 60% of the Muslim population in Gujarat receive primary education, while in Bengal it is less than 50%. Though Muslims form only 8-9 per cent of the population in Gujarat, Muslims represent 8.5% of  Government employees. While Bengal has a substantially higher Muslim population, they represent only 1.2 per cent of Government employees.

The promised failures of the Left and TMC are coming home to a lost generation. They are finally waking up to the reality of development versus religion, of opportunities versus appeasement.

No wonder, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is all out of stop this silent march. From Iftar parties to praying at mosques to stroking unnamed fears, she is all guns blazing. She warned her party members to be on the look out for the BJP to spread communalism in Bengal!  But the populace is all too wary of these gimmicks and aligning themselves with the “strong” party and hope of a better future.

We are surprised by Bankura event

We are surprised by inaction of Bankura police. Arup Chakraborty, the District President of TMC. 2 days back like any other uncivilized leader of TMC he openly called out to his party workers to kill BJP workers.

TMC leader had criminal background earlier as well. History says he was booked under section 247 case of East India Company's ancient coin forgery in 2004. So, this sort of utterances suit his criminal nature. He openly said to party workers which is in tape below that he will make sure no criminal case will be instituted if party workers kill BJP workers. So he made sure that Police is nothing but puppet of TMC.

This was reported in every media.
