A Lesson in Caution

2014 has been nothing but a saga of one debacle after the other for the TMC. The debacles have range and variety and depth. It has shaken the very foundations of Bengali society.

But is all of this really making people turn away from the TMC?

Even in the midst of the Madan Mitra hyperbole, we have reporters reporting that people are still steadfast in their support of the TMC. Though numerous reports circulate to the contrary, let us not get complacent in the fact that all this fiasco is going to make people look for better alternatives. After all, TMC did win 34 seats in the Lok Sabha elections!

The majority of the Muslim community is still backing Mamata Banerjee and the politics of pilferage. Sensible Bengalis do not vote in elections or are not allowed to vote. Students are not moving en masse to one political party or the other.

So though the BJP is making significant in-roads into Bengal, one must keep in mind that TMC has a decade of building up their cadre base and people of Bengal are still emotionally attached to Mamata Banerjee. They may still give her a second chance to make things better and to keep her 2011 promises.

It is time to take stalk for all stakeholders. The message to drive change needs to harden and become louder. Change is critical to the very survival of this great state of ours. We can no longer let it degenerate to the point of no return. Individuals who had retuned to the state in the great promise of the TMC are disillusioned and leaving the state. There are fewer and fewer Bengalis willing to stand for Bengal and fight for its development and growth.
